The Smoking Goat is an award-winning French bistro located in San Diego, California, that have Foodies salivating. Inspired by his European Farm-to-Table childhood and culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu Paris, Executive Chef and Owner Fred Piehl, marries French and California cuisine with the bounty of San Diego in a way that is rustic, yet refined and imaginative, yet unpretentious. The dishes created focus on quality ingredients that are procured by the Chef. His goal is to obtain the finest proteins, in-season, local, sustainable and organic vegetables and fruit. This provides guests with a unique culinary experience, reminiscent of the French countryside. Boasting small boutique wine producers that are carefully selected, craft draft beer, fine spirits and craft cocktails assures there is always the perfect pairing.

History

Established in 2010.

The original Smoking Goat Restaurant opened up in February 2010 as a 30 seat bistro. It was expanded in 2012.

Business Owner

Chef Fred's culinary influences can be traced back to his childhood. Growing up with German parents meant mealtime was important for his family. When Fred was in Grade 2, his Father took a project in Switzerland so he and his family relocated to a small town called Echichens for a couple of years. Their neighbor was a winery and they were quickly exposed to a European way of life. They did a lot of travelling and experienced many different cuisines. When they came back from Europe, they adopted a more European way of living. They bought sides of beef from local farms, instead of buying it at local grocery stores. Thus began Fred's farm-to-table training. After going to college in Colorado, Fred went to Le Cordon Blue in Paris to study cuisine and pastry. He graduated with Le Grande Diplome. When Fred left Paris, he moved to La Jolla, California. He worked at a number of restaurants before fulfilling his dream and opening his own restaurant, The Smoking Goat.
