PIER 39 is the premiere entertainment destination in the heart of the San Francisco waterfront. Along with two levels of dining, entertainment, shopping and attractions both on The PIER and in San Francisco Bay, PIER 39 is home to the world-famous sea lions, who have been delighting guests daily at K-Dock since 1990. The PIER is a gathering place for millions of guests annually. With picture perfect views of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, Alcatraz and the city skyline at almost every turn, it is easy to see why PIER 39 has recently been named the most visited attraction in San Francisco for the ninth consecutive year. History

Established in 1978.

OCT. 1978 - PIER 39 opens. MAY 1979 - Blue & Gold Fleet launches its first Bay Cruise. AUG. 1981 - Moor + South acquires property. MAY 1983 - Diving pool replaced with Carousel. JAN. 1989 - PIER 39 named the third most-visited attraction in the country by USA Today. JAN. 1990 - California sea lions begin arriving on K-Dock. APRIL 1996 - Underwater World (now Aquarium of the Bay) opens. OCT. 2003 - PIER 39 celebrates its 25th Anniversary. DEC. 2008 - Arrival of the new San Francisco Carousel. NOV. 2009 - A record 1,701 Sea Lions haul out on PIER 39's K-Dock. Six new floats are added. JUNE 2013 - Musical Stairs are installed. OCT. 2013 - PIER 39 celebrates its 35th Anniversary. JAN. 2014 - The Sea Lion Center opens. JAN. 2015 - PIER 39 celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the sea lions' arrival. OCT. 2017 - PIER 39 celebrates its 39th Anniversary. SEPT. 2018 - PIER 39 named a San Francisco Legacy Business. JAN. 2020 - PIER 39 celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the sea lions' arrival.
