Beringer Vineyards
About the Business
Specialties
No winery more thoroughly embodies the timeless appeal and seductive flavor of Napa Valley than Beringer Vineyards, Napa's benchmark producer since its establishment in 1876. As Napa's oldest continuously operating winery, Beringer is an American wine icon built on 146 years of winemaking tradition. Visitors are welcome to explore the expansive property, which was designated a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. In 1883, Frederick Beringer began construction of the 17-room Rhine House mansion--a re-creation of the family home located on the Rhine River in Germany. The extraordinary edifice sparkles with original Belgian Art Nouveau stained glass and carved woodwork. Frederick's Rhine House is the center of Beringer's reserve and library tastings, and guests can enjoy discovering our impressive wine portfolio during many experiences, overlooking expansive lawns and lush gardens. Beringer has the distinction of being the only winery in the world to have both a white and a red wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator (1986 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1994 Private Reserve Chardonnay--the first time a white wine garnered this coveted award). In its 146 years of operation, Beringer has had only nine chief winemakers. Today, Winemaker Ryan Rech, continues the exemplary Beringer winemaking legacy of crafting wines that highlight the best of Napa's many exemplary terroirs.
History
Established in 1876.
Jacob Beringer left his home in Mainz, Germany, in 1868 to start a new life in the US. His brother, Frederick, had preceded him by five years and settled in New York. Jacob had heard that the warm, sunny climate of California was ideal for growing wine grapes, so in 1870 he traveled, first to San Francisco and then on to Napa Valley. To his delight, he discovered rocky, well-drained soils similar to those in his native Rhine Valley. Jacob bought land with Frederick in 1875 and in 1876, they founded Beringer Winery with a shared desire to produce world-class wines from the Napa Valley. Jacob took up residence in a farmhouse on the property built in 1848, now referred to as the "Hudson House." The Hudson House serves today as Beringer's Culinary Arts Center. In 1883, Frederick began construction of the 17-room mansion--a re-creation of the family home located on the Rhine River in Germany. The recently restored Rhine House is the center of Beringer's Reserve and Library Tastings.
