History
Established in 2014.
The Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill opened in May of 2014 after new ownership modernized the building. The building was initially constructed in 1916 for the Monterey Elk's Club with the Strand Theater on the ground floor. The ground floor theater operation continued as the Regency, Rio, and Regency again until 2005. Chef Brandon Miller's culinary chops, developed on the Monterey Peninsula at the acclaimed Stokes Adobe and the popular Spanish tapas restaurant Mundaka, is paired with Head Brewer J.C. Hill's brewing style focused on bright, West Coast style ales, Belgian-inspired ales, and a variety of experimental batches. Hill and Miller will be working closely together to marry the food and beer offerings at Alvarado Street giving the ultimate sensory experience. Our mission is to provide our guests, both local and visitor alike, a unique yet casual environment. We look forward to seeing you and inviting your family to become a part of ours at the Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill.

Business Owner
Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill owner and Head Brewer J.C. Hill is committed to expanding the Craft Beer scene on the Monterey Peninsula and helping to revitalize historic Downtown Monterey. A professional brewer and Certified Cicerone, Hill's career began after graduating from Cornell University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality Management where we worked for Economics Research Associates a firm specializing in hotel development feasibility. The entrepreneurial spirit in Hill's veins could not be denied, so he partnered with Cornell classmate, Alex Pierson, and opened California Kebab, a fast-casual California-Mediterranean restaurant in 2009. This hobby soon turned into an obsession, and Hill decided to expand his knowledge by earning an Associate Degree in Brewing Science and Technology from The Seibel Institute in 2011.
