About the Business
Specialties
Founded in 2005, The Lobster Trap is an Asheville institution, bringing the highest-quality sustainable seafood from the ocean to the mountains. Inspired by the friendly atmosphere of a New England backyard lobster bake, the restaurant has sourced its lobsters from the same Maine-based crew since its founding. The Lobster Trap offers a dining experience unlike any other in Western North Carolina thanks to its classic menu featuring favorites like surf and turf, clambakes, chilled seafood towers, crab cakes and more.
History
Established in 2005.
Amy Beard-Proprietor Originally from Maine wanted to bring a taste of Maine to Asheville, NC "where the mountains meet the sea". In 2006, Amy looked to Chef Mike to bring in fresh seafood from other coasts as well. The Lobster Trap soon became the place to go for fresh seafood. The Lobster Trap has been voted #1 seafood restaurant in WNC every year since opening in 2005. In 2009 they introduced fresh beer with the opening of Oyster House brewing company. Demand soon exceeded production capacity and the brewery has moved to West Asheville. Of course you can still get fresh Oyster House beers at The Lobster Trap. In 2014 they renovated their entire bar and dining area to provide customers with a more comfortable and enjoyable dining experience. 2015 was the 10 year anniversary of The Lobster Trap. They partnered with Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch to ensure that all of the seafood served is fished using sustainable methods.

I grew up working at Harbor Fish Market in Portland, ME. I fell in love with Asheville in 2002 but missed having fresh seafood from the coast. I was back in Maine visiting my best friend, lobsterman Captain Tom, when I came up with the idea for The Lobster Trap. Captain Tom said he could send me fresh lobster and fish whenever I wanted. I worked with Chef Mike to create relationships with other fishermen and distributors around the country. We renovated a historic building right in the middle of downtown Asheville to create something welcoming and The Lobster Trap was born in March, 2005.
