LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT) is a medium-hub, full-service airport with commercial jet service to major U.S. cities and through service to international destinations. ONT is located in the Inland Empire, approximately 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the center of Southern California. The airport is the centerpiece of one of the fastest-growing transportation regions in the United States. ONT's more than 114 daily flights provide service to and from major cities in the United States and Mexico. ONT's airlines include AeroMexico, Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest, United/United Express, and US Airways. The facilities include two terminals, a ground transportation center and parking for the traveling public.
History
Established in 1923.
The first Friends of Ontario Airport landed an airplane on a dirt patch near San Antonio Avenue and the Union Pacific railroad track. The aircraft was a Curtiss JN4 "Jenny" and the first airport was called Latimer Field, named after the orange-packing company next to the airstrip. After the move from Latimer Field to the southwest corner of the current airport, the landing field became known as Ontario Airport for the first time. To accommodate the war effort, ONT was changed from the dirt field of the 30's to a modern airfield with concrete runways and an air traffic control tower. In 1942, two concrete runways were constructed. The 1950's saw dynamic growth at ONT and the airfield was designated "International" in 1946. On September 27, 1998, the new terminal service complex opened - four months ahead of schedule and $26 million under budget.
