About the Business

Specialties

The Natural History Museum (NHM) occupies a special place in Los Angeles. It's one of L.A.’s oldest cultural institutions, and today, it's the anchor of an emerging cultural, educational, and entertainment hub in Exposition Park. We show off extraordinary specimens in exhibitions such as Age of Mammals, the award-winning and world-class Dinosaur Hall, the Gem and Mineral Hall, and our beloved dioramas. In addition to sharing the history of the planet, we also explore the transformation around us right now in our ongoing Becoming Los Angeles exhibition, the outdoor Nature Gardens, and the new Nature Lab. These exhibits look at the relationship between environment and people, past and present, in L.A. In all of these experiences at the museum, whether they're inside or outside, we’re interested in the intersection of nature and culture—in L.A. and beyond.

History

Established in 1913.

On November 6, 1913, Exposition Park and the new museum -- called then the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science, and Art at the time -- opened formally to the public. A two-week civic celebration ensued, dovetailing with the opening of the Owens River Aqueduct. Today, The NHM has amassed one of the world's most extensive and valuable collections of natural and cultural history -- more than 35 million objects, some as old as 4.5 billion years. Its curatorial staff not only cares for those collections, but uses them for groundbreaking scientific and historic research. The Museum also curates new, immersive exhibitions that give visitors the opportunity to explore the "big picture" of our planet -- specimens and objects, the stories behind them, and the increasing interrelatedness of the natural and cultural worlds.
