History

Established in 1992.

In 1992, Equator Coffee House opened at 22 Mills Place. Over time, Equator's offerings evolved to include hookah, and in 2005 the site expanded to include a full menu and bar. It wasn't until 2014 that the restaurant & bar were rebranded as Edwin Mills by Equator. We decided to keep "Equator" in the name because of the coffee house where it all began. Our ties to the past remain important even as we modernize. Edwin Mills by Equator has evolved through the years much like the surrounding community that it belongs to. At the same time, maintaining a connection to Old Pasadena's history is one of the most important objectives for owner and Pasadena local, Teddy B. With our quality New American menu, welcoming ambiance, and original cocktail selection, Edwin Mills by Equator serves as a cultured space for locals and beyond.

Under the creative guidance of Teddy and his professional staff, Equator has matured from coffee shop and hookah bar to internet café to restaurant-bar. In 2005 I had a decision to make, do I want to keep my doors open or close. Starbucks was killing the Coffee business for mom and pop locations. I decided to bring in alcohol and take it to the next level. In 2014 after people walking by were saying that's a coffee house I decided to rebrand The Equator. Edwin Mills by the Equator named from the surrounding alleys Edwin Alley and Mills Place, which are by the Equator in Old Pasadena known for our Best Happy Hour and Live Music. I'm bringing urban cool and quality to the masses in the suburbs. My underlying decision-making strategy when it comes to food, beverage, comes down to one word--quality, "If it's quality then it makes the cut. If it's not quality then it's out the window, and I really believe that's a sustainable model."
