About the Business
Specialties
A dining landmark in Historic Downtown Mobile, Alabama, Wintzell's Oyster House is known far and wide for its "oysters - fried, stewed and nude." Don't like 'em raw? Try a dozen chargrilled! Wintzell's is designated by national and regional publications as a "must experience" destination for both locals and tourists alike. While oysters headline the iconic brand, Wintzell's menu comprises signature seafood dishes like bacon wrapped shrimp and redfish bienville as well as regional favorites, including award-winning seafood gumbo, homemade bread pudding, and two specialties native to Mobile: West Indies salad and fried crab claws.
History
Established in 1938.
Wintzell's Oyster House was founded in 1938 as a six-stool oyster bar by J. Oliver Wintzell. While the restaurant and brand have evolved significantly since then, this restaurant's original décor, with its walls covered in thousands of Oliver's homespun sayings, remains wholly intact, offering an atmosphere that's lively, casual and unmistakably southern. With over 80 years as a Gulf Coast tradition, Wintzell's is still shuck'n!

I have worked in many capacities at Wintzell's since my family purchased the iconic restaurant in 2000. In fact, there are some great old photos of me and my younger brother dipping the infamous Wintzell's po'boy bread in liquid butter and putting it in the toaster machine in the early 2000s. While the Wintzell's family sold the restaurant in the 1980s, our family is committed to preserving its legacy as a "must experience" destination for locals and tourists. And much like its early days, the restaurant remains a family business, now with three generations of family members involved in all matters. We care deeply about your feedback — good or bad, we've heard it all and want to keep hearing from you. The wonderful, 5-star reviews bring joy to our team while the negative reviews help to guide our focus and ultimately make us stronger. We look forward to serving you soon at one of our three Mobile County area locations; it's been 85 years, folks, and we're still shuck'n.... enjoy!
